From the HCHB President
September, 2007
Hello Everyone,
We just wanted inform you all of some of the latest happenings in the ministry. As most of you already know, there were 2 hurricanes that made landfall in Central America. One impacted the northern portion of the country of Belize. The other one brought some flooding in the southern portion of the country after making landfall in Honduras. Belize is still cleaning up the northern part of the country. We are pleased to report that there were no deaths to report from either storm.
More recently, the last week of September to the 1st of October, Cheryl led a
medical team back to Belize. The team included 2 Doctors and a friend from our church. Cheryl reported that they saw 25-30 patients per day. They started an Epidemiology study of asthma patients. Dr Chaudhry, the Pulmonologist, saw where this study would be beneficial to those suffering from asthma. So, the data was collected on those patients. The plan is to set up a treatment program that can be duplicated in the small towns and villages. They were able to computerize the data from the last three months at Southern Regional Hospital (SRH). We will w
ork along with Dr. Castillo, from SRH. We hope to have this new program operational in the very near future. The hope is to return in six months and begin to implement the new program. We will continue to follow current patients and collect more data. Dr. Batta and Kay were very helpful in the work that was done. To say that they were stretched is not even the half of it.
We are now working on our next trip for Jan/Feb 2008. We still need to put together all the rest of the plans, but so far things are going well. We have one major concern and that is transportation within Belize. If anyone knows where we can get an 18 or 15 passenger van or bus, please let me know. We definitely need transportation since we will most likely be staying about 20 miles from the hospital at a new hotel.
This hotel has been most helpful to us this trip and they are willing to work with us in the future. This resort, named Parrot Cove, was willing to work with us since they understand our mission in Belize. They have an excellent staff that was so willing to help us. We don’t feel like we were taken being taken advantage of. We had been staying at another place during previous trips; however, their main concern was mostly regarding the finances. They didn’t truly understand that we were there to help the local people of Belize and not just on vacation. So we really need transportation to and from this hotel. We just want to say thanks to the staff of Parrot Cove for taking care of the team, especially since Hubert wasn’t there.
Ciao,
Hubert
